The Fountainhead

Book Summary of The Fountainhead

Book Summary of The Fountainhead'The Fountainhead' by Ayn Rand represents the struggle of the human spirit to triumph in its fight against collectivism. Regarded as her breakthrough novel, the book that soon came to be regarded as a masterpiece was rejected by 12 publishers, before finally seeing the light of the day. Read the book to find out what made it such a huge success and why it has remained a top-of-the-mind literary effort even after all these years.

When Ayn Rand started to write The Fountainhead, she wanted to steer clear of making any overt political statement. But as she began to spell out the story of the proudly individualistic Howard Roark, an architect who struggles to survive in a world ruled by traditions, she realized that there was no escaping the political or philosophical undertones. In spite of that, The Fountainhead still continues to be seen as a novel that describes one man's fight against the system.

The characters in the novel are memorable. The protagonist is Howard Roark, an architect who believes that only an individual's vision can produce genuine art. He decries committees and councils as he feels that their interference could result in mediocrity being passed off as art. The upright Roark is often quoted as the embodiment of the ideal man. Another main character in the novel is Peter Keating, Roark's rival who is motivated more by material considerations rather than creative ones. Ayn Rand's heroine Dominique Francon is a strong woman who. during the course of the book, learns to live life on her own terms. She gives in to her passion and emerges stronger and more creative because of it.

The novel goes on to answer the final question - will Roark survive his war against the system, or will he be forced to come to terms with it?

The Fountainhead got off to a moderate start. Reviews were mixed and initial sales were depressing. But the book picked up on the strength of word-of-mouth reviews and it has sold over 6 million copies and been translated into several languages. Two years after it was published, it entered the New York Times bestseller list.

In 1945, Ayn Rand worked on a condensed and illustrated version of the novel. It was syndicated in several newspapers. A film based on the book, starring Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal was produced by Warner Brothers in 1949.

Miss it and you'll miss something damn GOOD!!!
After reading fantasy for a year, I was looking for something more real...(Yup there you go I said it!) First thought of picking up a biography or a comedy, then some of my Internet friends suggested this book, "The Fountainhead". I started it expecting nothing but an easy, simple read....but Boy! It just blew me away!! The characterization in no other book I read til date has matched the depth or complexity(how different people can be!) displayed by Ayn Rand. It will show Life in different perspectives and well beyond one's beliefs at times. Howard Roark and Dominique Francon are two characters that will always stand in my thoughts and each time I have a tricky situation in life I wonder how they would react to it (try it if you've already read the book, else once you read it!). Don't fret over 'Huge No. of pages', it's one book you'd wish had some more to read so you could stick with it for long. I wouldn't just recommend, but INSIST you read the book. It's been 68 years since the 1st print came out and here I am going Gaga over it!!!

Happy Reading!!!

Indescribable
Not very often do you come across a book, so enigmatic that it makes the other work of art fade into the hindsight. I am yet to read something as immaculate as The Fountainhead. I am yet to see a character as heartbreakingly honest as Howard Roark. I salute the lady who thought light years ahead of her time. A book that changed the world for the better. A world wherein people of fibre still exist!!

Be careful after you read this book.
This book is based on the concept of Romanticism. It exalts the single person as the source of creativity and genius.

After reading this book you may find yourself being afraid socially - sometimes impervious to superior ideas just for the sake of originality. Know the difference between reality and the concepts mentioned in this book. Reality is not so black and white as mentioned in this book. However once you realize there are people like the protagonist of this book you will be amazed, awestruck or utterly dejected.

This is a great book written in a great style. It'll keep you occupied for days on end.

Awesome.
It's a beautifully written philosophical novel by Ayn rand.I am impressed with characters put up by her.

Without any doubt, Howard Roark: proves a soul who love his work more than anything else in his life, never compromised with the majority who wants to change himself towards their ideals. Where as, the character of Peter Keating was exactly opposite to Roark. The character portrayal of Elsworth Tooey,Gail wynand and Dominique francon is also commendable. Ayn rand shows us differences in human soul. how different they are !

And finally, thanks to Flipkart for your service. Without Flipkart, it would have been harder for me to find this book in my locality. You people are making me read a lot these days.

If anyone want to buy this book. Go for the combo of 2 books by ayn rand ( Foundainhead & Atlas Shrugged - Rs 389) which is economical and good paper quality with hardcovers. Go for it.

TABOO !!

This is a philosophical novel. It takes passion for getting through it. If you are not a passive reader it will generate a strong like or strong dislike in you for what it represents. This is because it talks straight. People who have never had any intense feeling of achievement or pride or self-esteem will find it too boring or extreme. And it is a rare feeling these days. This book changes lives. You become more of what you really are, good or evil. If this seems impossible for you, then everything else is too.
